Best site for free e-books
Q. I just got a new e-reader, and I want to fill it up with e-books. Where can I find some freebies?
A. You have dozens of great sites you can use. Start with sites like Project Gutenberg and Books Should Be Free. These compile books, audiobooks, music and other goodies that have fallen into the public domain. That mostly means classics, but you might find some new books. If you only want new books, use sites like Feedbooks or 425 Free eBooks. Finally, if you have a Kindle, use Free-book Sifter to find books that Amazon gives away for free. Once you've filled up your gadget, use a program like Calibre to manage all of those books.
Send faxes without a fax machine
Q. In my quest to go paperless, I'm hitting a stumbling block with faxes. Some businesses still want them. Are there any solutions to this problem?
A. There are plenty of online fax and fax-to-email services. I like HelloFax because it gives you a few free faxes every month. That should be enough for the rare businesses that still want you to communicate through fax. Receiving faxes is a little tougher, but you can do it on the cheap. Online-fax service eFax gives you a working fax number that syncs to your email address. You can receive 10 pages per month for free. If you need more, you can sign up for the full service for $15 a month.
Take a screenshot on your phone
Q. I want to capture and share a funny conversation I had with a friend. How do I take a screenshot on my smartphone?
A. That depends on what kind of phone you have. On iPhones and iPads, press and hold the home button along with the Sleep/Wake button. It saves a screenshot your Camera Roll or Saved Photos section. For Android 4.0 and later, hold the Power and Volume Down buttons. It saves the screenshot to a special section of your gallery. If you have Android 3 or lower, you need a tool like AirDroid. For Windows Phone 8, press the Start and Power buttons simultaneously. You'll find a special Screenshots album in your Pictures hub.
Answer questions for cash
Q. I need some extra cash to make summer travel easier. Are there any ways to make quick cash online?
A. What if I told you that you could earn quick cash just by answering questions? You can do it with sites like JustAnswer or KGBAnswers. You don't even need to be an expert on a topic — though it doesn't hurt. Instead, you answer questions that can be solved through online searches. Of course, you won't be raking in the dough, but every little bit helps. If you want to make more cash for your knowledge, check out tutoring sites like StudentofFortune or OkTutor. These sites pay better, especially for science, math and technology tutors.
Boost your smartphone's audio
Q. When I'm listening to music on my smartphone, it doesn't always sound that great. Is something wrong with my phone? Can I fix it?
A. Some phones are stuck producing mediocre audio. However, you can try a few tricks to improve the sound. If you're listening to your own music and not streaming radio, a new music player can work wonders. On Android, try Rocket Music Player or Poweramp. There aren't as many to choose from on iPhones, but TapTunes is a nice freebie. SonicMax Pro works on both and focuses strictly on equalization for a more fine-tuned sound. If you're really desperate, you can grab a cheap portable amplifier to improve the sound.
